The University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Yale College, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – even such prestigious universities will be attended by students who have won scholarships within the framework of the Universities projects, which has already been funded for six years by The Kellner Family Foundation. The Foundation scholarships will allow 57 students from the Czech Republic to study at (mostly foreign) universities.

The Universities project serves the Foundation to award grants to students who record great academic achievements, but their complicated social background makes their access to quality education difficult. This year, The Kellner Family Foundation will provide funding of approximately 11 million CZK for these purposes.

“Every year, approximately a hundred students apply for grants from the Universities project. Each and every one of them has outstanding academic records, each of them intends to become an elite in his/her field. The selection of 16 students who were newly admitted to the scholarship programme was therefore very difficult”, says Dr. Hana Halfarova, PhD, a director of the Universities and Open Gate projects of the Kellner Family Foundation. The grants provided by the Kellner Family Foundation are usually not the only means of funding for these students.

“Our grantees will not only acquire excellent education, but will also gain valuable experience of living abroad. The most sought after destinations are universities in the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, Netherlands, and other countries. Some of them carry on with their studies in the Czech Republic”, continues Hana Halfarova.

The fields of study of the grantees are also very diverse – from mathematics and physics, chemistry, economics, law, journalism and political sciences to artistic specializations, such as graphics or musical instruments.

The grant applications must be submitted by the end of May each year.

The application must include the applicant’s study results history and other academic achievements, a confirmation of their language skills in the form of test results, a recommendation by a person participating in the academic or artistic development of the applicant, information about the chosen university, an applicant’s essay on their future plans, and documentation illustrating their current financial situation. Emphasis is also placed on volunteer work, i.e., on the applicant’s work for the benefit of his environment and society.
