Thanks to the Universities project, 52 Czech students will study at the world’s best universities, come autumn

The Universities project has been funded by The Kellner Family Foundation ever since 2009. In the academic year 2015/2016, a total of 52 students will receive scholarships with a value of approximately 10 mil. CZK in total. In all, 12 new students were admitted to the programme for this year, while 40 more will carry on with their previously commenced studies.

The Universities project intends to support high quality education for students who record outstanding academic achievements, but whose social background does not allow them to develop it to their full potential. As in previous years, the most frequent destinations for the supported students will be universities in the United Kingdom, followed by USA, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Germany.

“A total of 146 students applied for scholarships this year. We appreciate their intent and courage to travel abroad and to start living of their own accord in a foreign country. We are also pleased with the successful graduates who completed their studies, and who are sought after by employers, both in the Czech Republic and abroad,” states Dr. Hana Halfarova, PhD, the Director of the University and Open Gate projects within the Kellner Family Foundation.

Most university grantees will study in the fields of humanities, social sciences, science, or maths. The most represented regions among the scholarship holders are Prague (13 students), the Moravian-Silesian and Central Bohemian regions (8 students each), followed by the Highlands, Zlin, and Olomouc regions (4 students each), regions of South Moravia and Karlovy Vary (3 students), South Bohemia (2 students), Pilsen and Usti (1 student each). One student comes from Somalia.

About the project

Applications for scholarships must be submitted by the applicants by the end of May each year. The application must include the applicant’s study results history and other academic achievements, a confirmation of their language skills in the form of test results, a recommendation by a person participating in the academic or artistic development of the applicant, information about the chosen university, an applicant’s essay on future plans, and documentation illustrating their current financial situation. Emphasis is also laid on volunteer work, i.e., on the applicant’s work for the benefit of his environment and society.

The Board of Trustees then selects the most eligible applicants (based on the recommendations of the Project Committee), and awards financial grants. First-time applicants are also invited for personal interviews before the final decision is made.
