Mensa Grammar School: achievements and events (2014)

Marcela Fatrová

In the last and current school year, the Mensa Grammar School (MGS) presented its ideas, operation, and achievements on a number of occasions and events, some of which were directly organized by the school. As usual, the Open Days were among the most significant events. Besides this, the school management discussed the education of gifted children on a TV discussion at TV Metropol, and gave lectures at many conferences, e.g. in Bratislava, Budapest, and Ostrava.

In the afternoons and during weekends, the school premises are used e.g. by Prague Polymer Company (creative use of Fimo polymer clay) and for Prague regional chess tournaments. The school also participated in several charity events, e.g. donated the profits from the celebrations of 20th anniversary of the school to the Good Angel foundation, and helped with the Heart Day organization. The students co-operate with the Elderly Club, teaching Sudoku and other logical games and puzzles to the elderly.

We managed to organize several events for students - an adaptation school trip for first graders (Prima class students), a ski and snowboard training course, a sightseeing tour to Great Britain, school trips, and a graduation ball. Several one-off events, such as the climb on Snezka Mountain, an astronomy expedition, and an excursion to the Museum of Hygiene in Dresden also took place.

Students’ achievements

In the last school year, our students recorded multiple achievements in knowledge-based competitions and Olympiads, as well as in sports and other fields. To mention just a few of the most significant achievements:

  • Our student, Lenka Svobodova, staged, together with our students and friends from other schools, the musical “Demons in the Sun”, the premiere of which was in June 2014 in the Za plotem theatre.
  • Our student, David Labsky, won 2nd place in the national programming contest called IT Beaver Award.
  • Our student, Martin Sedmera, was awarded the Scio Award for the best result in Prague during mathematics testing of sixth year students among the multi-year grammar school students.
  • Our student, Kristyna Smidova, joined the contest “Do you know how to teach? Prove yourself!” organized by Khan School. The contest is based on recording a tutorial video on a topic of choice.
  • Under an alias, Jakub Ondra, our eighth year student, became popular in the public thanks to his musical talents. From an occasional street-singer, he managed to get to the top ranks of the charts, and has already recorded his second single.
  • The school chess club ranked 5th in the all-Prague competition for schools.
  • Our student, Vasek Polak, won the regional round of the Secondary School Expert Activities contest in the Teaching Aids Development field.
  • Karolina Savincova won the regional round of the Secondary School Expert Activities contest in the field of Theory of Culture, Art and Artistic Creations.
  • Amalie Hilgertova became the 2013 Junior World Champion in Canoeing, both solo and in teams, and also won 1st place at the U23 European Championship in teams, and 1st place in the Czech Junior Championship.
  • Jiri Rambousek won the Czech AutoSlalom Cup in the Junior category.
  • Philip Hladky was announced the best goalkeeper of 2014 in the Czech Republic in Box Lacrosse, and the best goalkeeper of the Junior European Box Lacrosse Championships 2014.
  • Lukas Dvorak won the 1st place in U16 Czech Biathlon Championship, 1st place on U16 OLYMPIC HOPES 2014 (CEC), 1st place in the Czech Cup (U16) 2013/2014, and last but not least, 1st place in the U16 Czech Roller-Ski Biathlon Championship.

Achievements of our teachers

Our teachers are great personalities and often successful in their activities beyond teaching. To name just a few, I would like to commend Dr. Eva Patakova, Ph.D., Dr. Tomas Koci, Ph.D., Dr. MgA. Veronika Riedlbauchova, Ph.D., Mgr. Jan Kratochvil, Mgr. Martin Kulhanek, Martin Kalivoda and Dr. Mgr. Maria Kukova, Ph.D.

We strongly believe that our school employs great teachers who, besides being experts in their respective fields, are also great people who are able to pass on their enthusiasm to their students, which also leads to exceptional students’ results. At the same time, they can be partners for the students, which helps in forming a creative and friendly atmosphere at school, and carries the students towards great achievements.
