Spring meeting of members and supporters of Children’s Mensa – April 2011

For the second time, we participated in a meeting of families with gifted children (the first time was in autumn, 2010) and after the last year’s experience, the entire family was looking forward to it. The Havel husband-wife team prepared another perfectly organized weekend, full of non-traditional games and contests, as well as lectures for parents, and other interesting activities, with the highpoint being Saturday’s cipher game.

The weather was quite good – it was a little cold, but not raining –so we were able to team up and set out, one team at a time. The route took us through the surroundings of Deštné, with various tasks awaiting us. We successfully found them all, but due to the cold weather, we decided to postpone their deciphering until we were back at the hotel, with a warm cup of tea.

After a good lunch, most of us relaxed in the hotel swimming pool. Late in the afternoon, some of the parents attended a lecture on educating gifted children, while the children competed in “pictorial Chinese whispers”, and in a search for pictures. After dinner, all of us – this time it was all together – participated in an evening outdoor game that was again absolutely flawless, and both the younger and older children loved it. At the hotel gate, the kids kept receiving slips with their names on, and their task was to put them into glasses that were at the nearby cabins, illuminated by candles. However, they had to avoid the sentries with torches, as whenever they were seen, they lost their slip and had to go back for a new one. The kids were so excited that they would have probably happily played until morning. However, every game must come to an end. We moved back into the hotel, and the evening games continued in the pool, where light sticks were scattered in the pool, and the kids hunted for them. Besides being fun, it also had almost a magical atmosphere, thanks to the illumination from the light sticks. It was an amazing idea!
