Report from the Logical Olympiad Finals 2010
“This competition isn’t about knowledge, it’s about stimulating creativity, imagination, and an original approach towards problem solving. You will need all of that during your studies, as well as in real life.” Those words by Petr Tluchoř, the patron of the competition and the Chairman of the ODS Parliamentary Group, welcomed the competitors in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.
With a smile, he also added that logic can also be sometimes more of a burden than an advantage: “Those of you who intend to use your own brains; you will be hitting the barrier of bureaucratic limitations and miscomprehension more than the others. But don’t give up. Should reason be a servant of the bureaucracy, or bureaucracy a servant of reason? B) is undoubtedly correct.”
Just like last year, over forty volunteers who helped prepare and organize the finals of the competition assembled early in the morning in front of the building of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.
The best 200 out of 15,000 participants from all parts of the Czech Republic were accompanied to the registration desks by their proud parents, grandmothers, grandfathers, or teachers. However, only the participants themselves could go on to the plenary hall. Inside, they were welcome by Tomáš Blumenstein and Petr Tluchoř, and surprised by Alík the dog, a mascot of one of the competition patrons. A first test and a series of tasks both amused the kids and gave them a hard time. This year’s tasks even set their hands to work, as in one of the blocks, the competitors had to put together tangram pieces, and there was even a short film containing (what a surprise) a cipher. That particular cipher was one of the easy ones, so it probably didn’t make anyone’s life too hard.
The unanimously most favoured team member was Alík the Dog. He kept replying to the kids’ inquisitive questions, shaking hands (actually paws) with them and, to their general delight, agreed to pose for a collective photo. The entire team of organizers and employees of the Chamber of Deputies patiently and enthusiastically took care of the competitors, and then suddenly, the competition was over, and the announcement of the winners was here.
In the Primary school category, Filip Brukner from the Primary School Velvarská in Kladno was named as the winner, the 2nd place went to Jan Bednář from the Primary School ZŠ Sirotkova, Brno, and the 3rd place to Johana Prudká from the Primary School Klimkovice. In the category of secondary schools, the first and third spots went to Marek Michl (winner) and Tomáš Novotný (3rd place) from the same school – the Grammar School in Česká Lípa, which was surprising, but well deserved. The 2nd place was taken by Jiří Kučera from the Grammar School of Christian Doppler in Prague. Congratulations to all competitors, and many thanks to all of the organizers!
