Logical Olympiad – the tenth year is over

Zuzana Poláková, Petr Mazal

The biggest worldwide Mensa event – the Logical Olympiad, organized by Mensa CR – has taken place this year, for the tenth time. Like in previous years, more than 60,000 children and 4,000 teachers from more than 3,000 schools took part in the competition.

The biggest Mensa event, of course, comes with a lot of work. And it is exactly the organizers who devoted their free time and efforts to this competition whom we owe this THANK YOU.

The competition begins with registration and a primary internet round. With 60,000 participants, one must of course expect a lot of questions, requests for clarification, or for sorting out some problem or another. All those have been dutifully responded to by the members of our Communications team, who helped both during the registration and competition stages, and who kept resolving all of the problems with lost passwords or with signing in to the primary round/running the test. We’d like to send a big Thank you to Michaela Kubaniková, Martina Pokorná, Pavla Janovská, Zuzana Sattlerové, Jitka Markesová, Kateřina Hráčková, and Bronislava Milínková. We would also like to thank Juraj Ladický and Tomáš Hladík for the supervision of and help with operating the competition website.

Every year, new tasks for primary rounds, regional rounds, and for finals have to be prepared anew. Altogether, more than 300 individual tasks are needed for all categories, and their preparation requires an immense amount of work. Hence, we would like to express our appreciation and to thank all members of the team preparing the tasks. The team was headed by Eva Sedláčková, but Martin Sedláček, Antonín Mička, Michaela Jánošková, Jan Heller, Jitka Karásková, and Martina Hrůzová were of great (and perhaps the greatest) help to her. Those names do not include all who took part in the preparation of the tasks, not by far, so we would also like to thank all others who took part in the preparations. The tradition of task preparation, combined with a pancake party, will definitely continue next year.

It would not be possible to organize the tenth year, just like all those before, without reliable and selfless regional organizers. Lucie Malechová, Pavla Pechová (Region of South Bohemia), Lenka Šnajdrová (South Moravia), Petr Čavojský (Karlovy Vary), Věra Heřmanová (Hradec Králové), Hana Kotinová (Liberec), Jiří Šmach (Moravia-Silesia), Tomáš Blumenstein, Lída Děcká (Olomouc), Jana Havlová (Pardubice), Věra Hellerová (Pilsen), Naďa Burešová (Prague), Petr Štěpán (Central Bohemia), Iva Berčíková (Ústí), Zuzana Šimůnková (Vysočina), and Jana Šindelářová (Zlín), along with their teams, managed a smooth run of all fourteen regional rounds. Thank you, and all members of your regional teams. You managed to prepare a just competition for more than 2,000 children, and to choose the best of them for the finals. Your success required a lot of work – from organizing itself, to publishing of results, and communication with the media. We greatly appreciate your devotion – we really could not get by without you.

Last but not least, we would of course like to thank everyone who helped in organizing the Finals. I am sure that all of the children who participated in it took home a valued experience – both from the competition itself and from the chance to visit the special venue, i.e., the Ball Games Room of Prague Castle.

We are really happy that Mensa CR has a team like yours, a team that allows you to prepare an event admired by the entire Mensa world...

...and, as is the way of the world, we will ask you for help next year.

THANK YOU in the name of the entire organizing team of the 10th year of the Logical Olympiad.
