Regional round of the Logical Olympiad 2017 in Hradec Kralove

We met at 7AM at the traditional place – at the building of the Regional Council. The funny thing was that each of us parked on a different floor of the underground parking, so the transport of all materials on a single trolley from three cars using local elevators was quite complicated.

Nevertheless, we still managed to prepare the room and everything else before children and their accompanying persons arrived. Category A is always a bit hectic – both because of the number of participants, and because it is the first. Besides parents and teachers, representatives of sponsors were present, namely Ing. Alena Synková from the Hradec City Council, and Mgr. Martina Svatoňová, as a representative of the Regional Council.

Despite two cases of over-anxious mums, we rate the presence of the parents positively, as it gives them an opportunity to watch what their children can do, and how concentrated they can be. True, the smallest children showed us that they can behave just like all their peers, and during the final show after the competition, where there were only mock tasks to compete for chocolates, they were shouting and stopping almost at the giant screen where the tasks were projected; the older the competitors were, however, the quieter the auditorium was, and at the end, one could hear a pin fall.

Competitions of categories B and C ran as smoothly as sand in an hourglass, everything was fine.

Věrka and Anička were at the registration desk, repeating the instructions for the 149th time, Romana and her team of test evaluators consisting of students from the Faculty of Informatics were evaluating the tests in the adjacent room and, especially in category C, kept finding novel solutions to the presented tasks in the competitor’s tests.

Others had a lot to do in the meeting hall. Bohouš and Klára kept entertaining the competitors, to give them a break after an hour of full concentration, and giving them the opportunity to replenish their blood glucose levels by chocolates won for extra tasks. Whoever needed more than the “powder IQ” that they received at registration could have replenished their strength this way (among other things designed to allow Petr and me enough time to enter all of the results in the computer).

In category A, we were witness to huge emotions, when the completely surprised winner cried with happiness. A nice surprise was represented this year by the fact that unlike in previous years, schools from Hradec were not represented by a vast majority of participants, but more than half of the present children came from more than 20 different schools from outside of Hradec. The competition ended before 4PM, when the last prizes were awarded.

In the end, I would like to thank everyone who participated for their maximum efforts; among those who have not been named yet, I would like to thank Iva for her continuous peddling between the hall and room of assessors and our colleague Emer for great presentations.

Thanks, Team – and see you again next year!
