Celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Mensa Grammar School

On 10th October, the Spolkový dům in Prague-Stodůlky hosted a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Mensa Grammar School. In the relatively large ballroom, a set of posters mapping the history of the school and other interesting facts provided a warm welcome to the visitors.  It is a pity that better and more extensive photographic evidence of the first years of the school history is not available. Students’ works of art were presented on the walls; many of them really inventive.

The event was officially opened by the Principal, Mgr. Kindlová, who welcomed the guests. I followed, voicing many thanks to everyone participating in the founding, developing, operation, and stabilization of the school. After this short formal speech, professional performers came on stage – students of the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague who showed us some really wild science (have you ever tried to pour boiling water into a tub of liquid nitrogen?), followed by a magician, during whose performance all eyes were fixed on the stage. Student performances followed, many of which were very funny (I have to mention the fight-dance), while others took us back to the years of traditional primary school performances. Most performances were by younger students.

While they were on the stage, more and more guests kept arriving, until the hall was packed. After the performances ended, a diamond toast followed. Why a diamond toast? As promised, one of the guests indeed found a tiny diamond on the bottom of her wine glass. We received more refreshments and a cake sent by the school founder, Kateřina Havlíčková. Then, we had an opportunity to dance while the principal herself accompanied us with her singing.

The entire event was undertaken in a very positive atmosphere. Very warm and informal communication between students and teachers was apparent and noteworthy. The celebration of the 20th anniversary was proof that the current management has created a stable and well-run school, loved by its students.
