Regional round of the Logical Olympiad 2016 in Hradec Kralove
This year’s regional round took place for the fifth time at our favourite place – in the crisis management room, P1 906, at the Regional Council in Hradec Kralove (a former brewery). Despite the name of the room, it has no association with any crisis regarding the Logical Olympiad, it is a meting room where the Crisis Management Team meets when any unexpected critical event occurs. And as there were none on the date of the competition, our Olympiad could take place.
For the second year in a row, Ms Martina Svatoňová, an amazing woman and an employee of the Department of Education, was of assistance to us and arranged a great service for us, beginning with the IT and audio-visual equipment, and ending with the facilities such as the kitchen.
Again, a team of evaluators consisting of 10 students from the Faculty of Informatics and Management of the University of Hradec Králové, who were arranged for by Ass. Prof. Pavel Pražák, was of great help. The students also helped build a great atmosphere in the team, everything ran smoothly, and we were able to complete all three categories, including the award ceremony, by half past three.
Based on the advice by Petr Čavojský, who shared his experience from the Karlovy Vary regional round, we allowed access to the room to the parents and teachers this year, not only during the award ceremony, but during the entire competition. It turned out to be a good thing, not just for the PR of the competition, but it also definitely supports the competitors’ standing in the eyes of their escorts. Especially in Category A, the room was full, and the parents even joined in the traditional quizzes for chocolates.
And the results?
The number of boys and girls in the top positions was quite balanced this year. In Category B, girls occupied exactly half of the 14 announced positions, in categories A and C, the numbers were also close to half. I mention it because in the past, there used to be a significant predominance of boys in the top positions.
In category A, a clear winner (with a more than 20 point margin) was Jan Dresler from the Milada Horáková Primary School in Hradec Králové, the only participant of that school in the regional round. The Úprkova Primary School however became the most successful school in the regional round, as three pupils attending it were among the top ten. In categories B and C, the margins between winners, those who qualified for the finals, and their closest opponents were minimal. In the end, three girls (one from each category) and seven boys proceeded into the national finals. The winner of category B was Tomáš Pokorný from the Hradec Bohuslav Balbín Bishop Grammar School, and category C was won by a regular participant of the Prague finals, a student of the J.K.Tyl Grammar School in Hradec Králové, Michal Preclík. Those who qualified for the national rounds were awarded valuable prizes (e-book readers, tablets, external hard disks), competitors who took places behind them won board games, flash disks, or power banks.
I would like to express thanks to the entire team – Romana, the head of the team of assessors, Petr the IT expert, Míla the photographer and co-author of the tasks, Bohouš the presenter of the show quizzes. Thanks to Věrka and Anička for their work at the registration desk, and Iva and Honza for everything else they did to contribute towards the smooth running of the competition.
