Regional round of the Logical Olympiad 2013 in the Hradec Kralove Region
On Friday, 18th November, a regional round of the Logical Olympiad took place in the Hradec Králové Region, as well as in the entire Czech Republic. The core of the team of organizers remained practically unchanged from the previous year, so we were able to draw on our previous experience. Like last year, we again struck a successful co-operation with the Department of Education of the Regional Council of the Hradec Králové Region, who once again provided us with the premises for participation. Still, we had to cope with some novelties.
The greatest challenge of this year was the immediate assessment of the tests so that the winners can be announced straight away, which increased the demands on the number of volunteers. Fortunately we were helped by eight students from the University of Hradec Králové who joined our team, and helped especially with the test evaluation. Even the competitors themselves were however immensely helpful, especially through their enthusiasm about the competition. The enthusiasm for the competition was obvious in the vast majority of the competitors, and it was easy to see that they enjoyed tasks in both the main competition and in supplementary competitions that were presented in the breaks between tests. Even the youngest competitor, the first year student Natálka, with an assistant assigned to her who read her the assignments. Thanks to the grants by the Regional Council and by the City Council, we had the means for purchasing prizes. The most successful competitors in each category were rewarded with electronics and with board games. In total, the regional round took eight hours, and resulted in the selection of twelve competitors who qualified for the national finals. Of course, we subsequently had to perform a proper evaluation of the whole day in a nearby restaurant, during which plans for further improvements for the next year’s regional round were laid down.
Our thanks for the support should be in particular given to the Regional Council and City Council of Hradec Králové for their (not just) financial support, the chocolate factory ALTIS Kolín for the sweets they provided for our competitors that were especially useful as rewards for the children during the supplementary competitions, and the members of the local Mensa group or their help in organizing the contest. Special thanks belong to the students from the University of Hradec Králové, who helped us evaluate the results very quickly, and announce the results of each category in accordance with the pre-planned schedule, and to Lucie Jelínková for arranging and maintaining contact with them.
