Regional round of the Logical Olympiad 2013 in Prague
On Friday, 8th November, the premises of Mensa Grammar School hosted the regional round of the Logical Olympiad. It was the sixth year of the competition organized by Mensa CR. All morning, participants competed to qualify for the national finals. At the same time, IQ testing took place in other rooms, both in the morning and in the afternoon.
The total number of participants grows every year, and this year, the number reached an incredible 41,109 competitors from 1,969 schools from the whole Czech Republic. The tasks included various logical problems, puzzles, anagrams, and numerical puzzles. As LO is not a knowledge-based competition, it gives a chance to excel to children who possess great logical skills, but whose excellence is not obvious in the traditional subjects taught at schools. This is possibly one of the reasons why the Logical Olympiad is constantly growing in popularity among students.
All of the competitors had to pass the nomination round to qualify for the regional one. The nomination round was online only, divided into three categories, according to the age of the competitors. In Prague, 157 pupils and students out of 3888 participants qualified for the regional round. The schools with the highest success rate included the Jan Kepler Grammar School (Prague 5), Christian Doppler Grammar School (Prague 6), and the Jiří Guth-Jarkovský Grammar School (Prague 1). From the regional round, the 19 most successful children from all categories qualified for the national finals, where they will compete with the best competitors from other regions. The Logical Olympiad Finals will take place on 25th November in the Ball Games Room of Prague Castle, where the absolute winners in each category will be decided.
Many thanks to all students and pupils who participated in the Logical Olympiad this year, and we hope that this event will grow in popularity even more in the future.
