Markéta Erbsová

It is 26th November, 15:20. The Ball Games Room of Prague Castle falls silent, I am holding a pen and waiting. The Logical Olympiad Finals 2012 is approaching its climax – the winners are being announced. Jan Brada from the 14th Primary School Plzeň, Zábělská, is the winner in Category A. Category B is won by Ondřej Motlíček from the Šumperk Grammar School, and the Category C by Jiří Guth from the Jírovcova Grammar School in České Budějovice.

Hi, you have just become winners of the Logical Olympiad 2012, congratulations! Please introduce yourselves – what school and region did you represent in the finals?

Honza: My name is Jan Brada, I’m from the Pilsen region and I attend the 14th Primary School Plzeň. Last year, I came up third in the Logical Olympiad.

Ondra: I’m Ondřej Motlíček, I came from Šumperk in the Olomouc region, where I also attend the local grammar school. I am 14, and my hobbies include chess and handball.

Jirka: My name is Jiří Guth, I’m from Borovany in South Bohemia and I commute to České Budějovice, Jírovcova Grammar School. I’m in the seventh year, and I especially like maths and physics.

Whoever is waiting for you at home or beyond the gate of the Royal Gardens will be definitely mightily pleased. How did you spend the Sunday before the finals? And who has crossed their fingers for you?

Honza: I visited a friend, it was his birthday. As for fingers crossed – probably all my classmates, family, and some teachers.

Ondra: I spent Sunday at home, tidying up. My family – mum, dad, brother, grandma and grandpa, and classmates probably all crossed their fingers for me. Everyone.

Jirka: I’m sure that my mother and brother are my biggest fans. Especially my brother, as he is definitely looking forward to finding whatever I win here under the Christmas tree. Yesterday, I had a temp job as a referee of a softball match.

In all, 32,190 pupils registered for the competition. How did you find out about the competition, and who registered you in it?

Honza: The teacher at school told us about the Olympiad, and most of the class participated.

Ondra: I found out about the Logical Olympiad last year. I was just browsing the web and found a link for the Logical Olympiad. I had a look at it, registered – and here I am.

Jirka: The Logical Olympiad was brought to my attention at school three years ago. Ever since, I have kept participating every year, and keep improving, which of course says nothing about my outlook for the next year.

In all, there were eight blocks of questions in the competition, which one did you like the most?

Honza: Well, I liked the written tests.

Ondra: I liked the last part, the projected movie, the most, together with the first written test.

Jirka: I liked Tetris the most, it’s a classic.

Thank you, have a safe journey home! Still, one last question – what would you like to become?

Honza: I have no idea yet, probably a scientist.

Ondra: I’m sorry, I have no clue.

Jirka: I intend to associate my professional career with physics – so probably in some international power/energy corporation.
