This year, the Logical Olympiad, an extraordinarily popular and successful competition organized by Mensa Czech Republic, took place for the ninth time. In this competition, learned knowledge and algorithms do not play a role, the key lies in logical thinking, quick wit, and creativity.

This year’s regional round of the Logical Olympiad in Brno was revolutionary. Last year, our team decided that we would try to perform it as a show. We managed to arrange for beautiful premises, and Lenka managed to get us a higher budget. It was easy to be wise before the event, so we didn’t fear anything. The preparations were, however, largely theoretical, and many of us went to sleep on Thursday before the competition, asking ourselves whether it is going to be a mess or not. I will not stretch your patience, and tell you the result straight away – it wasn’t. At least, Iֹ’m not aware of it.

On 28 November 2016, the 9th National Finals of the Logical Olympiad took place in the Ball Games Room of Prague Castle. Altogether, 195 students and pupils out of 61,451 participants originally enrolled in the local and regional rounds competed in three categories. The winners, Radovan Šolle (category A), Jan Brada (B), and Jan Petr (C) brought home their prizes – laptops. The parents of the Petr siblings must have been extremely proud of their sons – while the older, Jan, was the champion of category C, the younger brother, Jakub, took the silver in category B.

All 14 regional rounds of the Logical Olympiad took place on Friday, 4th November 2016. More than 2,000 young people participated in it. Let’s look back and remember their unique atmosphere.

This year’s regional round took place for the fifth time at our favourite place – in the crisis management room, P1 906, at the Regional Council in Hradec Kralove (a former brewery). Despite the name of the room, it has no association with any crisis regarding the Logical Olympiad, it is a meting room where the Crisis Management Team meets when any unexpected critical event occurs. And as there were none on the date of the competition, our Olympiad could take place.
